Gardening without your own garden – the community of Kleve makes it possible
Would you like to grow vegetables, chat and laugh with your neighbours? Then the community gardens in Kleve are just the thing for you! Community gardens offer you a wonderful opportunity to get involved in a green oasis, even if you don’t have your own garden.
Insights into the green diversity of Kleve’s community gardens
Two community gardens used the venue of DialogPunkt Kleve to introduce themselves. DialogPunkt aims to raise awareness and encourage people to get involved in order to help shape the transformation of the Lower Rhine region collectively. At a time when community vegetable growing is increasingly taking a back seat, the neighbourhood garden of the SOS-Kinderdorf at Klapheckenhof and the Kellen Neighbourhood Garden want to change that. It’s not just about tilling, but also laughing, chatting and singing. Join in and experience the joy of gardening together!
The neighbourhood garden in Kellen Nature Park
The neighbourhood garden, run by Christa Bos, is located on a city-owned plot in the Kellen nature park. The garden gates are open on the first Tuesday of every month from May to October and everyone is welcome to drop by. The garden works according to the principles of permaculture – a sustainable method that harmonises people and nature.
This garden is an inclusive project that brings together people from the immediate neighbourhood with the help of the Kleve Adult Education Centre (VHS). “Our community garden is a green oasis for everyone who doesn’t have their own garden,” says Christa Bos. Julian Krause (VHS) and Sonja Lemm (integration officer for the city of Kleve) add: “Integration, inclusion and encounters are capitalised here.”
Solidarity community garden of the SOS-Kinderdorf at Klapheckenhof
The SOS-Kinderdorf at Klapheckenhof offers another exciting gardening project in Klever Unterstadt. Together with dedicated neighbourhood gardeners, neighbourhood manager Michael Gesikiewicz runs the garden. All interested residents of the neighbourhood in Klever Unterstadt can use a large field and a greenhouse free of charge. “We invite all neighbourhood residents to take part in our community garden project,” explains Gesikiewicz. “We want to cultivate the land permanently and in harmony with nature.”
This project aims to promote the UN’s sustainable development goals, such as combating poverty and hunger by growing food, promoting health and well-being through physical activity and strengthening social ties. There is even a snack garden with delicious vegetables for children.
