Klever Birne 2024: 17 raised beds seeking co-creators and a home

Where does the project stand today? A visit to the group, who even brought a raised bed to the university for their presentation to the jury.

Martin Winkler, Team Leader Facility Management at Berufsbildungszentrum Kreis Kleve e.V. (BBZ) and co-initiator of the application, is delighted that the prize money of 2,000 euros can be used to purchase the necessary materials, such as the paints and information signs. As already reported, the most important material, the wood, will be provided by the Kässbohrer company. ‘And the herbs that will fill the raised beds with life in the coming year will be provided by the Agrobusiness Niederrhein network,’ adds Marcus Trappe, project coordinator at Agrobusiness Niederrhein e.V.

Hello Kleve, creative groups sought!

The BBZ youth workshop is now looking for people from kindergartens, schools, associations or neighbourhoods in Kleve who would like to build and design a raised bed together with the youth workshop.

Interested groups should send an email to juwe-kleve@bbz-kleve.de by 15 January 2025 at the latest. It would be desirable for the groups to think about the sustainability objective to be designed before making initial contact.

The actual work phase is planned for the period from February to March 2025. The raised beds will then be planted in the spring before being set up as exhibits on the Kleve campus of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences (HSRW) in May 2025. After about a month on campus, the raised beds will be moved to the respective groups and remain there.

Good to know

  • Raised bed dimensions: The raised beds are 1.30 m x a maximum of 0.90 m in size.
  • Construction site: The construction site is in the youth workshop of the BBZ in Kleve on Ackerstraße on the former Pannier site. Alternative locations can be arranged individually. Please note that the tools require electricity.
  • Timing: As the participants in the youth workshop are usually present from Monday to Thursday from 08:00 to 16:00 and on Fridays from 08:00 to 12:00, the activity should take place during these times. If this is not possible for interested groups, flexible arrangements can be made.
  • Duration: Several hours of construction and design time are to be expected.
  • Transport: The youth workshop organises transport to the HSRW and to the final location.
  • Costs: There are no additional costs for the participating groups.

One question remaining

The team from the BBZ youth workshop is well on the way to realising its award-winning project idea. Coaching is not required for the realisation. Instead, those responsible approached us with another matter. In the youth workshop at BBZ Kleve, young people and young adults up to the age of 27 are taught important competences and skills to help them develop a personal plan for the future.

Like many youth social work centres, the BBZ youth workshop is dependent on public funding from local authorities and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. They have now expressed the wish to be coached in the area of public relations. After all, the key to greater visibility and thus to the awareness of decision-makers is good external communication. We are very happy to provide support in this area and are currently looking for a suitable coach.
