The team of our agroforestry real-world laboratory has been planting and conducting research since 2023 with regional agroforestry practitioners and interested parties in the Lower Rhine region. Agroforestry refers to the combination and cultivation of arable land or permanent grassland with trees and/or animal husbandry on one area. In addition to direct research collaborations with agricultural businesses, the focus is on networking regional stakeholders on the topic of agroforestry. The Lower Rhine Agroforestry Practice Roundtable will take place for the tenth time in November. It will also continue in 2026.
Im Juni 2024 wurde der Agroforst-Praxisstammtisch Niederrhein initiiert. Seitdem treffen sich Praktiker*innen alle zwei Monate freitagabends auf wechselnden landwirtschaftlichen Betrieben und tauschen sich im Rahmen von Feld- und Hofführungen zu Agroforstthemen aus. Wer auf der Suche nach Erfahrungsberichten aus der Agroforstwirtschaft und nach regionalen Kontakten ist, ist hier richtig.
Various locations for practical experiences
Einblicke gab es bisher in traditionelle Formen von Agroforstsystemen ebenso wie in neuangelegte, moderne Agroforstflächen. Treffpunkte waren beispielsweise ein frisch gepflanzter Walnuss-Agroforst, eine Streuobstweide mit 700 Legehennen, eine Landschäferei, ein Geflügelhof mit Gänsehaltung im Agroforst, eine fünf Hektar große Elsbeere-Schwarznuss-Anlage sowie die Agroforst Demonstrationsfläche Alleen 3 in Kleve. Die Agroforstansätze und Produktionsziele der verschiedenen Betriebe variieren: von Energieholz, über Stamm- und Wertholz bis hin zu Obst- und Nussbäumen, die mit Nutztieren und/oder Ackerfrüchten kombiniert werden.
The agroforestry roundtable also discusses achievements and difficulties in the planning, establishment, and management of agroforestry areas—from legal aspects (including subsidies) and the selection of tree species to suitable tree protection and tree cultivation. In particular, the high investment costs and extensive management requirements are regularly discussed. Many ecological advantages are offset by long-term capital and land commitments. The agroforestry roundtable also offers opportunities for exchange on regional harvesting and processing methods for agroforestry products as well as profitable marketing, e.g., of nuts and fruit.
